What Are Salicylates? Salicylate Allergy/Salicylate Sensitivity/Salicylate Intolerance Symptoms

Salicylates are chemicals that occur naturally in many plants, including fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices and synthetically in medications such as aspirin, perfumes, body care products, preservatives and plastics. Foods high in salicylates include many fruits and vegetables that we may consume on a regular basis such as berries, avocado, spinach, broccoli, olives, tomato and cucumber.
Salicylate sensitivity or salicylate allergy symptoms are linked to:

  • Hyperactivity, irritability and aggression in children
  • Eczema, hives, dermatitis and psoriasis
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Sinus and asthma
  • Irritable bowel symptoms – reflux, vomiting, stomach bloating and pain, wind, diarrhea and/or constipation
  • Joint pain and arthritis

We find that most people with salicylate intolerance have no idea what could be affecting them. Research shows that about 20% of adults with asthma, 60% of people with food-induced itchy rashes, headaches or migraines, 70% of people with irritable bowel symptoms and 75% of children with behaviour problems may be sensitive to salicylates.

BodyConnect Healing and the energetic techniques we use, can help minimize your what your are experiencing without the need for an elimination diet. Salicylate sensitivity symptoms can be significantly reduced and it often only requires 2-3 sessions to experience a massive improvement. Our clients typically notice a difference in their health without changing their diet or lifestyle.

After a lifetime of being able to eat whatever I wanted, I developed extreme food intolerances and chemical sensitivities about 13 years ago. I was very sensitive to Salicylates, Amines, Glutamates, Sulphites, fragrances, petrochemicals…pretty much everything. The only way I had of managing it was through avoiding the foods or exposure to the chemical that I reacted to. I ended up with a very restricted diet and couldn’t eat most fruit and vegetables, onion and garlic, aged proteins (as well as a bunch of other stuff) without getting really unwell.
I eventually discovered that I had a digestive parasite, blastocystis, and with the help of the doctor who diagnosed the blastocystis, was able to get rid of it. I then worked on healing my gut, but after 6-9 months, although I had a higher tolerance levels, I still hadn’t really been able to re-introduce any problem foods into my diet. At this point I started seeing Tomaya (in the clinic initially and then I continued getting sessions online), who over a series of sessions helped clear my sensitivities to some Salicilates and Amines. So after 13 years, I am now able to eat foods like avocado, apples, blueberries, zucchini, spinach and leafy greens, corn and aged proteins (i.e. meat/fish can be a few days old) without getting unwell and have continued to be able to eat these foods for about a year and a half - yay!
I am continuing to have sessions with Tomaya to clear more sensitivities so I will be able to introduce more foods and tolerate more exposure to fragrances/chemicals.
I highly recommend Tomaya's allergy treatments - they have changed my life for the better.

I am sitting by my computer eating strawberries as I write this, amazed that life is actually beginning to get back to a degree of normal. After 18 months of debilitating skin rashes, headaches, irritability, lack of energy and feeling sick in general, I had no idea where to turn. A low Salicylate diet was helping, but frequent unexplained outbreaks continued. Two dermatologists had each given me a different diagnosis and a range of sticky steroid creams and tablets. This was treating the symptoms but not the cause. Allergy testing was inconclusive, and the allergy centre declared it to be an intolerance, not an allergy, so they did not want to know me. In desperation, I contacted Tomaya. At this point, anything was worth a try. After the first session, I could see definite signs of improvement. In just three sessions, my skin is clearing up, I am slowly reintroducing fruit and other foods back into my diet and I am feeling better than ever. Tomaya has been great, the treatment is painless, drug free, and best of all, it is working. Thankyou Tomaya!

I have had a lifelong issue with allergies and with salicylates, although salicylates weren’t diagnosed until I was in my 30s. I first had allergy testing when I was in high school (I am 43 now), and was allergic to dust, dust mites, many grasses, cats, dogs, and so on. I was subsequently desensitised twice over 20 years. This helped enormously for a long time but then I seemed to later become aware of or developed other sensitivities (on top of the ‘true allergies’). I started reacting in my 30s to drugs (I had anaphylaxis to penicillin and ibuprofen). After this, something else became really odd happened - I started reacting to foods; I now know that with salicylate sensitivity, we can reach a tipping point so clearly I was reaching my limit. I have been to various specialists and had treatments etc. but I wasn’t aware that my hives, rashes, and general fatigue was very related to the food I was eating - I ended up with a doctor who advocated for the RPA Elimination Diet and did this (very low salicylate diet) for quite a while, and I was fine after this for years (still not able to have most medicines, but I lived fairly well for years, though I was paranoid and took antihistamines daily anyway, and always carried EpiPen and steroids but fortunately didn't really need either for years). My system seemed to have built up a new set of intolerances though, on top of the old ones, and in early 2017, I started to get very tired, foggy brained, and started developing some reactions - to necklaces, rings, to food, to my leather shoes, and it before I knew it, I had itchy skin, a rash developed on my neck, hands and forearms, and would flare up almost any time I ate, or had coffee, or fresh homemade juices but it wasn't that bad at first. I knew to cut down salicylates, and this helped a little bit but with my other allergies (dust, grass, and so on), it was like I was fighting a losing battle. In mid-May, I took a new vitamin. Within 40 minutes, I was in an ambulance on the way to emergency as I went florescent red all over and I had had another major reaction. It seemed to be a perfect storm with the vitamin being a catalyst. For months, it was pretty awful - a daily battle to get better, while living on 'stodgy' food with low salicylates and on-off steroids. My skin wasn't repairing, and I would react if I tried ANYTHING new in that mix; in a hypersensitive state, even wearing a seat belt caused a reaction on my neck, and having coffee was problematic. My entire neck flared up all around it (inflamed and angry red, painful, and my hands and arms were in a state too), and I was at the lowest point, and was highly frustrated as I appeared to be doing mostly all the right things!
Someone highly recommended Tomaya to me. I was willing to try anything at this stage as I know how few doctors really seem to understand salicylates and the usual eliminations weren't working to the same extent as they had in the past. Tomaya was compassionate, listened, and was very thorough. This was not a strange alternative treatment at all. Tomaya did sessions over Skype with me. The first session on Skype went for over 2 hours. I had sent Tomaya photos and she was working from these as well as talking to me; the subsequent 2 times, I only stayed online for a short while and Tomaya did her session while I was offline or asleep. The next day after each treatment I had to have very low sals or low sugar (whatever was being treated) for 24 hours. After each treatment for the next day I felt exhausted, but I was healing! I had my first 3 sessions over a couple of weeks. I could not explain this and have NO idea how it worked but I started to be able to eat almost anything –for the first time in months, my neck was normal; it didn’t have a single spot and I had been worried it would scar, but it's all clear. I then had another 3 treatments to work on a few other issues, and I am amazed at how good I feel! Fast forward to the present months later: I feel like a new person. Tomaya gave me back my sanity and health. I have energy back! I would not recommend this if it didn’t work for me. I feel amazing, and trust me, I had tried almost everything.
